Manila-Laguna-Tagaytay
Fieldtrip Overview
One of the requirements of our Fieldtrip and Seminars subject is to attend 1 Major Fieldtrip and 1 Major Seminar; it is called Major because this activity will be outside Davao City. This Fieldtrip allotted 5 days staying in Luzon, specifically Manila, Laguna and Tagaytay, visiting different companies related to our course Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT). These companies include the Bayantel, Sea Change, IBM, SSS, Hitachi, MMDA and etc… We also attend a seminar/symposium at the University of the Philippines, Diliman in Quezon City, Manila for our seminar and visited other institute and department like Telecoms Training Institute (TTI), Advance Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) and etc…
Day 1
October 4, 2010, AM
Today, I went on a company visit to BayanTel, a telecommunication provider in the Philippines, 85.4 per cent owned by the Lopez Group and Benpres, a publicly-listed holding company. BTHC’s other main shareholder is the AIF. The operator has a majority stake in NTDN (National Digital Transmission Network), giving BayanTel access to NTDN's nationwide fibre-optic backbone covering 2,762 km and part-owned by six other major telecommunications carriers.
What I learned?
In Bayan Tel, I learned about how they access and connect with there clients. How they serve and satisfy them also. I learned about monitoring. This Monitoring they called is like checking all connection from time to time if there is a some bad or lets just say lost connection that may cause a bad impact to the company from there clients if they will not fix it immediately. In order to do that, they a monitoring team 24/7. I also found out that they use a device which is responsible for the connection or the networking. They called it “SWITCH”, which is not the switch that we use as hubs or any other device we use for connecting computers but it may function as the same as that. This switch is a box where all of the clients’ connection within its range is connected to through this. I also learned about there business market area, most of its location are located at the South Philippines, it’s because of the competency among other telecommunication companies.
What I liked?
Things I liked in the Bayan Tel is that there monitoring, even though it’s a tiring job, but for the sake or satisfy the clients they should invest to 24/7 monitoring service.
What I didn’t like?
Things I didn’t like, hmmm, the only thing that I didn’t is the place, our meeting place. Lack of chairs, my others group mates are standing and its so tiring.
Day 2
October 5, 2010- AM
Today, I went on a school visit to attend the UP-USEP Information Technology Symposium 2010 at the University of the Philippines. The seminar talks about lots of topic that can help in our IT career. The First Speaker, Prof. Lemuel Rodolfo Brana former president of the oldest and largest IT association in the Philippines talks.
Next speaker, she is an Artist Girl, she talks about more on animation, 3d modeling and some tips for people who wants to be like her. She said that in this industry, animation, grades are not important, what matter more is your ability, skills and creativeness. She also encourage us, just like Steve Jobs, to do things what we love. Just pursue your dreams.
Next speaker talks about Mobile application. He is so good at his work; it looks like he knows everything in his field. He talks about how to connect and use scripts to your program and some basic tips and requirements. This field should require not only skills and talents but also brains and knowledge. He gave us some pattern or let say step by step process on you will get to his position. First you should know the basic of programming.
Next speaker is Ms. Rose Ann Sale, MS Computer Science Student at University of the Philippines, Diliman. She talks about a Successful Thesis. She tells us how to make a wonderful thesis.
Next speaker, Mr. Lee talks about visualization, this visualization is all about representing data to a clear or understandable way to easily visualize the flow of the data.
What I Learned?
There are a lot of things I learned from this event, starting from the topic animation, from her, I learned the software to use in 3D modeling and animation, It encourage us to use the software like 3D max, Maya, and etc. than using open source counter part to those software its because company uses more to those software than the open source. Most of the students are really curious about this 3D stuff and Animation because its sound so cool and probably most of us are gamer; we enjoy the interface of the game like it was becoming so realistic.
Second, I learned from the speaker of mobile application is that all of the success and being good at programming, first, you should know “BASICS”. It is the foundation when it comes to many aspects. At mobile application, the things you need are the knowledge about scripting and connection all scripts in one application. Someone ask about how we able to know all of that if don’t know where to start learning, a good question I think, but the answer is start at the basic, start learning from your basic programming subjects, like C/C++ and JAVA, and then start upgrading your knowledge, don’t just stop at one or two languages, expand your knowledge.
Third, is from Rose Ann Sale the speaker of Writing a Winning Thesis, a learned some tips and tricks on how and what a thesis is.
What I Liked?
There are topics I liked specially the animation part and mobile application. It was so cool but there is a thing bothered me, I don’t how to use that, it is new to me and it was my first time to saw that application. But it keeps me interested to it. From, the speaker of writing a winning thesis, I also like her other topics, about on her proposed thesis, she developed an application for kids to improved there spelling skill, I get interested in application is what programming language they use, she said the they use JAVA as the programming language, and also there application uses a WII remote as the controller so I was so curious about that, then me and my friend approach her to ask her personally about the application, if I’m not mistaken the name of there application is “KINE2SPELL”. How they connect the Wii remote using JAVA? After approaching her we found out that there is a JAVA API for connecting the Wii remote, they just modify it and uses it as controller. It’s a relief for me because I used to use JAVA language until now.
What I didn’t like?
The symposium is very informative; you can get some new knowledge and ideas through it. But there are time that I didn’t like, for example, dead air or some boring parts of the topic or the speaker, most of the student will not listen and just chatting with there friends and others are sleeping.
Day 2
October 5, 2010- PM
Today, I went on a company visit to SeaChange and International Business Machines (IBM).
SeaChange International, Inc. The global leader in multi-screen video and one of the largest software companies worldwide. The Company provides innovative, Emmy award-winning solutions and services for back office, advertising, content, in-home devices and broadcast to hundreds of media companies globally, including blue chips such as Comcast, Virgin Media, AT&T, Hutchison Whampoa, Vodacom and DISH Network. Headquartered in Acton, Massachusetts, SeaChange has product development, support and sales offices around the world.
International Business Machines (IBM) is an American multinational computer, technology and IT consulting corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, United States. IBM is the world's fourth largest technology company and the second most valuable global brand (after Coca-Cola). IBM is one of the few information technology companies with a continuous history dating back to the 19th century. IBM manufactures and sells computer hardware and software (with a focus on the latter), and offers infrastructure services, hosting services, and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.IBM has been well known through most of its recent history as the world's largest computer company and systems integrator. With almost 400,000 employees worldwide, IBM is second largest (by market capitalization) and the second most profitable information technology and services employer in the world according to the Forbes 2000 list with sales of greater than 100 billion US dollars.
What I learned?
SeaChange – first arrival in there building, they took us to a room for a lecture, sad to say that starting the lecture, I have this filling of drowsiness; I can’t even listen to the words coming from the speaker. I don’t even have an idea what SeaChange all about. I only knew that SeaChange is all about video or just like channel or cable provider after the lecture and visiting its facilities. I learned that most of them are focusing to their newly developed system. Some sort of Online Video Streaming. I have learned that the connection they are using in there connection is through internet. The made and application along with a hardware and plug it into the television. After that, you can now sea different movies and shows in television, it has the features like replay, rewind, and fast forward, this is because before you can play a video, the system will check if that video is fully downloaded. But in incase not yet fully downloaded, you can’t see it in the menu. A like the idea of downloading the video, but note, not the whole video you are downloading but some part of it, like when you are playing video in YOUTUBE, the buffering in there is the downloading of some data that can be use to show you the video but not all parts of the video cause it may took a long process and it is large when it regards to the capacity.
International Business Machines (IBM) – after SeaChange, we proceed to the IBM which just located at the next building. After entering the building of IBM, there’s a man who works from IBM share with us his knowledge and all about IBM. First he shows us the Server Computer of the IBM which is located in that building. He discusses different parts and works of the server. After a short discussion, we proceed to a room where we discuss more about IBM.
I knew that IBM is stop producing hardware or let me say computers, but I’ve learned that the company producing computer for them is the Lenovo; IBM now is focusing more on new idea for new system. They have the “Incubator” which where the newly born idea starts from small until it grows bigger and bigger.
What I liked?
SeaChange- I like the staff and employee in this company, specifically those who are making there system/application. I like the way they discuss there upcoming technology, even though it is not yet released but they share it with us.
IBM – I really like there freebies, I wish I could get one. I really like the speaker in from the IBM, Ms. Iris, I liked the way she entertain us even though her course are not inclined with I.T., but she got it all the way to the top. They provide a place where in we can actually have access unto their servers and use it for our projects for free. We just have to inform them first and wait for their approval. One more thing, IBM buys projects or proposals. This might help freelancers and newbie developers.
What I didn’t like?
SeaChange – I don’t like are some of those facilitators when they are demonstrating there system for real thing, some of them are inconsistent, they have different answer or maybe because of many questions thrown to them and juggled their minds.
IBM – Nothing, everything in IBM are I really liked. Maybe, the thing I didn’t really like is not getting any freebies from them.
Day 3
October 6, 2010
Today, I went on an institution which was the Advance Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) located inside the University of the Philippines, Diliman. They had presented us several projects that they had. Most of their projects were seems like a nature friendly projects, like detecting if there is incoming Tsunami in a place near at the ocean and more on the hardware works like making a device that can text and call like other cellular phones, but it can’t be used as a modem.
The Bayanihan team, they were the programmer, creator, and developer of the Linux Bayanihan.
Linux Bayanihan, I already had an experience of using this when we had our Operating Systems subject. We are given the chance to ask about the Operating System and answer our problems because in our O.S. subject, we encounter problems when it comes to Bayanihan.
After, we went directly to the SSS or the Social Security System. They showed us a brief presentation as to how they protect and secure the files, the flow of there transaction and the networking of there branches nationwide and other information that they have. After the presentation, they divided us into groups for the tour. They also showed us the machines that they were using before and machines that they were currently using. Also, they showed us how they track and check dual or multiple or even false identities for the SSS accounts and the also showed us how they print and how to process the SSS id’s.
What I like?
ASTI
What I like about visiting ASTI was we were able to discuss our problems when it comes to Bayanhan and I really like there projects, they developed it for a purpose, to help other people not only for them but for the better of the nation.
SSS
I really like the hospitality, among those companies we visited, this company had given us more effort and they serve us delicious SNACKS. I also like there security when it comes to dual accounts of a person and the encryption they used to protect the uniqueness of each person.
What I didn’t like?
ASTI
I don’t have any problem with ASTI; I hoped that they will do more projects.
SSS
I didn’t like in SSS is that showing us there museum, I don’t know why we go there; I didn’t have any idea what is the connection of that in our course, hehehe.
Day 4
October 7, 2010
Today, I went on a company visit to Hitachi GST located at Laguna. In this company, they make hardware thing used by the computer, the Hard Disk or Hard Drive.
What I learned?
I learned that the Hard Disk/Hard Drive have 3 types categorized by sizes which are the 3.5’, the 2.5’ and 1.8’. Hard Disk 3.5’ is usually used in our desktops computers, the Hard Disk 2.5’ is for Laptops and Netbooks and Hard Disk 1.8’ are usually the data storage used for mobile gadgets.
Hard Disk 3.5’ the maximum data storage capacity reaches over 20 terabyte. Hard Disk 2.5’ its capacity is over 300 Gigabyte memory storage and 80Gigabyte for Hard Disk 1.8’.
They also showed us the process of producing data writers.
I also learned how large data or about terabytes can fit in a disk. Hitachi Hard Disk uses the “PERPENDICULAR”, instead of placing the bits horizontally; they make them perpendicularly so that many data can be fit.
Also, I learned the process in how they make their Hard Disks.
What I liked?
I really like the place in Hitachi. People are well oriented. I like the way they maintain the cleanliness of the place to keep their products safe and okay. I also like the process on how the make the metal called “Waffer” then chopped to single tiny bits that the Hard Disk used and the process on how they expands the capacity of their Hard Disk.
What I didn’t like?
Hitachi is very cool place for me and everything was so amazing and interesting, like there is no reason to say that it is just an ordinary company. The part in Hitachi that really didn’t like is when they gave those jackets to us and wore it as a requirement to enter the building. They gave me a jacket with an Extra Extra Large Size jacket. I don’t really liked wearing clothes that even my hands can’t reach the end of the arm of the jacket.
Day 5
October 8, 2010
Today, I went on a company visit to Telecoms Training Institute (TTI) and MMDA.
What I learned?
Telecoms Training Institute (TTI)
I learned in TTI is more on Networking, like connecting channels from one distant to another and the purpose of the Repeater if there some blocking spots like trees or high grounds.
MMDA
I learned that they are still using the Disk Operating System (DOS) based software for their traffic light controls and traffic monitoring system according to the speaker from the MMDA. I also notice the jobs of the employees in there like monitoring their area by time to time to check if there are any violations, accident or crime happened.
What I liked?
TTI
I liked the way the speaker from the TTI share its knowledge and his patience. I like the thing he shows us, it is nail cutter shaped-like, which is so expensive because of it has a diamond part of it which makes it expensive.
MMDA
I liked the way the monitor the traffic and the condition of Metro Manila, I also like those big monitor screen, which is displaying the Metro Manila and amaze to there CCTV Camera, it quite powerful camera, it can zoom better than the other ordinary camera.
What I didn’t like?
I didn’t like the place in TTI they have no cooling system for the first building we went. It was so damn hot and the rooms for discussion is not large enough to accommodate us.
What I can recommend for the improvement of the field trip and Seminar Program?
As a student, my recommendation about the Fieldtrip and Seminar Program is just stick to the planned schedule and if in case there are changes, keep in touch on the updated schedule. This activity needs to be planned wisely, the planning should be finalized maybe before a week or a month of the activity.
Also, the clustering of students by bus, to have to fully enjoyment of the students, group them according to their closed or maybe just group them by section. Mostly of there friends are there classmates.
I guess that's all. I hope the next Field Trip and Seminars Program will be more adventurous and enjoy.
Illustration 1: UPITTC (University of the Philippines)
My advice to those who will take their Field Trip and Seminars Program int the near future. From the experience of Field Trip and Seminars Program, you should save money starting 1 year from the program so you can buy lots of souvenir items and also you can pay the amount needed to the Field Trip and Seminars Program so it can't have some delay in financial problem.
A month from the program, fix everything, prepare you self and things needed as well as yourself. As much as possible, if you have some illness or not feeling well in the program, like visiting companies, please prepare first aid kit and don't just depend on the medical personnel assigned in your group.
I guess that's all my advice. Again, be sure that you are well prepared physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally and the most important is FINANCIALLY.
